On July 25, 2008, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture launched Media Partnership: Human Faces of Avian Influenza. The project awards mini-fellowships to media practitioners based in Indonesia in the fields of print, radio, television, video, digital/online media, photography and multi-media. The purpose is to generate enthusiasm and motivation for media practitioners to report on AI, mobilize them as active participants in the communication and advocacy process and create an experienced pool of communication and media practitioners.
The project was advertised through various mailing lists, advertisements in the biggest Indonesian daily newspaper Kompas, and through the websites of partners and the Media Partnership site: http://mediapartnership.wordpress.com. To date, the simple website has been visited over 4,500 times.
Advisory Committee members comprising government representatives, senior media practitioners, and FAO were selected on July 28. Some of the judges include representative from the Ministry of Agriculture Ms. Tjahjani Widiastuti, communication coordinator for the National Committee for Avian Influenza Control Mr. Memed Zoelkarnain Hassan, photojournalist guru and Head of the Antara Photo Agency Mr. Oscar Mutuloh, senior writer of The Jakarta Post Ms. Emmy Fitri, filmmaker and Program Head of the Jakarta Arts Council Mr. Abduh Azis (who also shares his jury duty with filmmaker Alex Sihar of KONFIDEN) and senior radio trainer Mr. Firmansyah.
